Limited License and Student Practice

There are four types of limited licenses available under the Minnesota Rules for Admission to the Bar and one type of limited license available under the Minnesota Supervised Practice Rules.

Temporary License for Legal Services Programs (Rule 8)

Under Rule 8 of the Rules for Admission to the Bar, a lawyer who has accepted employment in Minnesota for a legal services program may apply for a temporary legal services license.

Temporary House Counsel License (Rule 9)

Under Rule 9 of the Rules for Admission to the Bar, a lawyer licensed in another jurisdiction and employed as house counsel in Minnesota may apply for a temporary house counsel license.

House Counsel License (Rule 10)

Under Rule 10 of the Rules for Admission to the Bar, a lawyer licensed in another jurisdiction who accepts employment as house counsel in Minnesota may apply for a limited house counsel license.

Foreign Legal Consultants (Rule 11)

Under Rule 11 of the Rules for Admission to the Bar, a person who is admitted to practice in a foreign country as a lawyer or counselor at law may apply for a license to provide services as a foreign legal consultant in this state.

Supervised Practice

Law students who meet the criteria outlined in the Minnesota Supervised Practice Rules may be certified as student lawyers. The certification process is administered by the Minnesota Board of Law Examiners.
